Rep. Eli Crane has taken a bold step by filing articles of impeachment against U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer. This move comes after Judge Engelmayer blocked President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing a Treasury payment system. According to Rep. Crane, Judge Engelmayer’s decision constitutes an abuse of power and a clear threat to democracy.
Rep. Crane’s stance is that judges should remain impartial and not overstep their authority. He argues that if judges want to engage in politics, they should resign and run for office. This sentiment is echoed by Elon Musk, who has called for judicial impeachments in response to judges issuing court orders that block Trump administration actions.
The articles of impeachment filed by Rep. Crane accuse Judge Engelmayer of violating his oath of office and using his judicial position to advance personal interests and political gain. If the impeachment process moves forward, it will require a two-thirds majority vote in the Senate to convict and remove Judge Engelmayer from office.
