Dallas Mavericks Called Out Over Travis Kelce Diss
The Dallas Mavericks are facing backlash after calling Travis Kelce “Taylor Swift‘s boyfriend” on social media.
Travis Kelce sat courtside at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Sunday, to watch the Mavericks vs the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was joined by his friend and Kansas City Chiefs teammate Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany Mahomes.
The official Dallas Mavericks X account (@dallasmavericks) shared a clip of the duo. The crowd can be heard booing Kelce in the footage, who appears to be stunned by the negative reaction, and jokingly pulled a shocked expression. However, the audience erupted into cheers as Chiefs’ quarterback Mahomes—a Texas native—got up from his seat to wave.
Our guy Pat and @taylorswift13’s boyfriend in the house!” the Dallas Mavericks social media team captioned the video, tagging Taylor Swift’s official X account in the post.
Kelce and the pop star began dating last summer. They went public with their relationship in September, when Swift showed up to watch the Chiefs take on the Chicago Bears at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium.
Although likely well intentioned, the post divided X users. Some believed the Mavericks “did [Kelce] dirty” with the jibe.
“‘Taylor Swifts boyfriend’ is a crazy way to describe him commented Saddiq.
“What is this caption bro,” said Yoxic.
“Disrespectful to the best [tight end] in the nfl,” wrote @classic_pl.
“Is this how you disrespect other athletes and guests. Not cool at all,” said @ChoppedCheezeNY.
“Classless,” commented LilShadow.
“Respectfully, his name is Travis Kelce and he is a back to back Super Bowl Champion and@newheightshow co-host,” said Melissa Hill. “Yours truly, a Swiftie and [Mavericks Fan for Life].”
However, others found the post hilarious, with Yvonne Petite commenting: “Love it!!”
‘Taylor swifts boyfriend,’ damn,” said @immamunchYRG, along with the laughing emoji.
“The caption is the best,” agreed allyxx.
“Still jealous you don’t have Taylor Swifts Boyfriend on your team! Very understandable,” joked Niki.
User Janie hit out at critics of the post, writing: “These comments are so lame.
“They’re literally teasing him over his high-profile relationship. Remember jokes? He doesn’t care. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t need the mavs [social media] team to validate his professional success.”
Travis Kelce has been reached out to, for comment via email.
In September, former Mavericks owner Mark Cuban told Swift to dump the NFL icon. During an appearance on ESPN’s First Take radio show, Cuban suggested that the singer ditch Kelce for one of the basketball team’s players.
“Taylor, if you’re listening, sorry Travis, break up with him,” Cuban joked. “I’ve got a bunch of good-looking single guys that play for the Dallas Mavericks. I got you.”
In response, Kelce reached out to Cuban on X, telling the business mogul to sign him to a 10-day NBA contract.
