Liam Payne, former member of One Direction, has died in Argentina aged 31
He fell from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, police say
Fans are gathering outside the hotel to mourn the death of the singer, who was reportedly in the city for a concert of former bandmate, Niall Horan, a fortnight ago
Tributes are beginning to come in including from X Factor stars such as Rylan Clark who calls it “tragic”
Payne rose to global fame as part of the boy band formed in 2010 on The X Factor, which became one of the biggest pop groups in the world
The band announced it was going on a hiatus in 2016, and in 2019 Payne released his only solo album.
He has a son with Girls Aloud singer Cheryl.
One woman cried as she explained why she had come to the hotel on hearing of the news of Liam Payne’s death:
“They [One Direction] won’t get back together and he didn’t release anything else,” she told Reuters in Spanish.
“We won’t see him again, it was the only we had of living it.
He won’t be here anymore, what will we do now? My God, this can’t be.”
Asked if she was nearby when she heard the news she replied: “No I came here because this is the only way I have to say goodbye to him.
But no, I live very far away.”
‘We couldn’t believe it,’ says fan
We’ve seen footage of crowds gathering outside the hotel where Payne was found dead.
One fan, Violeta Antier, told Reuters why she rushed to the location after hearing the news.
“I was in my living room and my sister told me ‘Liam died’.
We couldn’t believe it, we came here directly to confirm it was true,” she said, speaking in Spanish.
“I saw him two weeks ago at a Niall (Horan) concert, another One Direction member.”
