Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who relocated to Montecito, California, in 2020 in search of peace and privacy, are now grappling with an alarming rise in crime in their upscale neighborhood which has recently been rocked by a series of unsettling incidents, sparking heightened concerns among residents.

According to Concha Calleja on Fiesta, local authorities alerted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex about a string of criminal activities in November.

These include eight reported incidents ranging from a kidnapping at a nearby home to the discovery of a burned car with a body inside, as well as several robberies, some involving violence.

In response, Harry and Meghan have significantly bolstered their security measures.

Privately funded by Harry, their team has advised the couple to minimize outings and exercise extreme caution when leaving their residence.

Everyday activities, such as Meghan’s occasional visits to the local farmers’ market, now involve a full security detail and a trained dog.

Concerns of targeted threats
Montecito police are investigating whether Harry and Meghan could be specific targets of criminal groups operating in the area.

“It is unclear if the acts are directly related to them, but the concern is evident,” Calleja noted.

Other residents in the neighborhood are also taking precautions, as both inhabited and vacant homes have been affected.

The unsettling developments have prompted speculation about whether the Duke and Duchess might consider a return to Britain.

Such a move would represent a significant shift in their pursuit of an independent life in California.
