Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce improvise to salvage a declining connection…see more
Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce have formed one of the most lethal pairings in NFL history during their time with he Kansas City Chiefs, and that was on full display on Sunday.
While not as explosive as past years, the two remain capable of creating something out of nothing and the Los Angeles Chargers were the latest team to find that out.
With the Chiefs trailing late in the game, Mahomes began to march them down the field with one of his classic comeback drives.
Although the Chiefs were already in field goal range, Mahomes managed to convince head coach Andy Reid to run a passing play on third-and-seven.
Like so many times before Mahomes scrambled and found Kelce, allowing the Chiefs to run out the clock and kicker Matthew Wright to hit the game-winning field goal as time expired.
Mahomes had nothing but positive things to say about Kelce after the game, stating he continues to lead by example at the age of 35.
“He means the world to me, man,” Mahomes said.
“I mean, without getting emotional, he’s a guy who has really kind of made me who I am in my career and [he’s a] true leader on the football field.
“Everybody says ‘security blanket’ but someone that I can go to at any moment and he’s going to make a big play happen.
As he’s gone throughout his career, he’s never dropped off as far as his work ethic and the way he leads, and I think that’s super important when you have a guy that’s going to have a gold jacket and he’s the hardest-working dude on the team.”
Kelce improvised on the play
Although Mahomes and Kelce delivered in the clutch once again, Reid revealed after the game that the play was supposed to be run differently.
Mahomes later confirmed that Kelce was supposed to go for a corner route, but that the future Hall of Fame freelanced and he adjusted as a result.
The pair aren’t having the best seasons of their career, with Mahomes averaging a career-low yards per game, along with just 20 passing touchdowns in 13 games.
As for Kelce, he is on pace for fewer yards and touchdowns than last year when his streak of 1,000 yard-seasons was snapped.
Despite the statistics stating they aren’t at their best, Mahomes believes Kelce makes him a better player.
“Just in terms as a player, obviously, he’s someone that plays in the same wavelength that I do and it’s hard to do that,” said Mahomes.
“I think you see it takes guys time because it seems like from the first day, I’ve kind of been on that same page with Trav.
“Then, seeing him work every day, everybody sees the personality on the TV and stuff like that, but you don’t see that everyday work ethic that he has.
I mean, he’s the guy that gets mad when they take him out of practice reps. That’s just the type of work ethic he has.
“Even for me, to come into the league and have a superstar player and see him work like that, it kind of showed me that I’m going to have to put that work ethic in if I want to get to that level.”
