Kansas City Chiefs guard Nick Allegretti played through a torn UCL in his elbow during the Super Bowl win against the San Francisco 49ers, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
An MRI confirmed a full tear of the ulnar collateral ligament, according to the report.
Allegretti suffered the injury during the second quarter but still stayed in the game to play all 79 snaps on offense, starting the game at left guard in place of All-Pro Joe Thuney who was out with a pectoral injury.
The 27-year-old who is listed on the Chiefs depth chart as the backup guard and center allowed one sack during the game, according to Pro Football Focus.
Beast man! We told him we needed him out there and he didn’t miss a snap!’ Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said on X.
Allegretti started one regular-season game this year and has won three championships during his time with Kansas City.
He was a seventh-round selection out of Illinois in the 2019 draft.
Allegretti will likely undergo surgery in the near future to deal with the tear and is also set to be a free agent this offseason.
Torn UCLs are often suffered by hard throwing pitchers in baseball, but Allegretti is not the only NFL player to suffer one and play through the pain recently.
49ers QB Brock Purdy also dealt with a torn UCL during last year’s NFC Championship against the Philadelphia Eagles.
